"North and South Carolina Marriage Records From the Earliest Colonial Days to the Civil War." William Montgomery Clemens. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc 1975. Some give date, some only names and county. Not complete record, some records were destroyed or lost. Marriage records prior to the 1900's are scarce for North (or South) Carolina. Until then, marriage licenses or bonds were not necessarily required by law, and many families opted to simply have banns read in order to meet the public notice requirement. Historians have generally relied on surviving church, court and private records (including submissions to publications like genealogical magazines) when compiling their resource materials, but they are far from inclusive. Family researchers should not be discouraged, therefore, by an inability to locate a surviving record. DN1

"Bastards, Bound Children and Guardians Abstracted from the Cumberland County North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1791 – 1818. Includes All Mentions Of Named Slaves And Other Items of Genealogical Interest." By Carolyn Gibbons, copyright 2014. There is much genealogical information here, but this is not a complete, every event abstract of the Cumberland County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. I have deliberately omitted pages of deeds (except when they mention that a person is deceased or living out of state), court cases when all that is given is the plaintiff(s), defendant(s), list of jury members and damages. I have usually omitted appointments of committees to lay off the widow’s portion of an estate, road workers and supervisors, and mentions of account audits. Many official appointments are included, but not all. These restrictions come from time and space constraints and from my original reason for looking into the minutes which was to search for bound children, bastards and their guardians. CB4

"Cumberland County, North Carolina Bastards, Guardians and Other Genealogical Abstracts 1819 – 1822 From the Minutes of Cumberland County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. By Carolyn N. Gibbons, copyright Jan 2016. These are not complete abstracts. I concentrated on the illegitimate children, the guardians (first mention of if a guardian is changed) and slaves when mentioned by name. There are other items in here – names of persons in jail, suits brought into the courts, and other miscellaneous items I thought were of interest. I have been extracting and not yet published from both the Court Records and the Deed Records and am willing to do look ups, especially having to do with persons who have moved from Cumberland County, relationships specified and slaves sold. Harnett Co.

"Harnett County, North Carolina Will Book 1, 1885-1905, 1915-1935 With Biographical Notes." Compiled by Carolyn Gibbons, self-published, revised Jun 2014. From the introduction: "When the courthouse in Lillington burned in October 1892, a huge chunk of genealogical data was lost. Luckily, some can be found in other places –the Fayetteville Observer has marriage, death and estate notices up to 1865, and some of the wills were brought back into the courthouse and re-recorded. The microfilm from the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh says that Harnett County Will Book 1 has wills from 1885-1909 and from 1915-1935, but I found quite a few earlier ones, even as early as 1860. This contains abstracts from that first book containing 190 wills. In addition to the wills themselves I have tried to add when possible a little more information. Originally, this was to identify people who were given only as initials and/or to give a better time for the death, but I found extra information that should be useful. This extra information is not definitely proven but given as hints and suggestions." CB4
