Although it is well known that the recordation of vital records in Baltimore City was required by law commencing January 1, 1875, few of us realize that prior to that date, there existed a system for keeping records within the City. Therefore it came as somewhat of a surprise to Ms. Meyer when this bit of information was called to her attention in 1971. Dates begin 1865 up to 1894 by Meyer. KC4, LST

Sometimes family links can be established by seeing same surnamed individuals at the same address. Also listed in alphabetical order are names of different businesses in different catagories in a separate section of the directory. Also listed in different catagories are churches and social clubs and some of the prominent businesses where the major officers are listed. Also listed are government officials in different levels of state and local positions. Individual listings note whether individuals are "colored" as noted by an asterisk (*) by their name, or not with no asterisk. Approximately 2700 pages. TJD

"St John the Evangelist Catholic Church Baptisms 1853-1882." Author: Arthur, Edward Patrick. Colonial Roots, 2010. Description (excerpted from author's intro): St. John the Evangelist was established in 1853 (Valley & Eager Streets, Baltimore, MD) to accommodate the rising number of Irish immigrants moving up from the Fells Point area. In 1853 there were 500 members but by 1881 it had increased to 5,000 consisting mostly of Irish communicants. It eventually had over 10,000 parishioners after the turn of the century. Baptisms are transcribed from the original records microfilmed by the Maryland State Archives in 1977. MP3
