"The Formation of a Planter Elite: Jonathan Bryan and the Southern Colonial Frontier." Alan Gallay. Athens, GA: The University of Georgia Press, 1989. In this 282 page scholarly work, Gallay, who won the 2003 Bancroft Prize in American History for his study of the Indian Slave Trade, treats the life of Jonathan Bryan (1708-88) a shaker and mover in early Georgia, both as significant in itself and as a source of insight into the social, political, economic and religious life of Georgia in its colonial and early federal periods. There is some limited Bryan genealogy, but the book is more concerned with Bryan's association with Governor Oglethorpe, the Habershams, the Houstouns, Morels, Henry Laurens, George Whitefield and the Great Awakening, various Creek Indian peoples, and with Andrew Bryan, pioneer black Baptist preacher, who was encouraged in his calling by Jonathan while he was the latter's slave. There is some mention of South Carolina, where Jonathan was born and raised. Bryan is a direct ancestor of the several Bryans who have been prominent supporters of the Virginia Historical Society for more than a century and of one of the two owners of this book. Copious notes, extensive bibliography and index. MPR

This is not a complete listing of all the cemeteries in Columbia County and there have been several errors found in the book. However, it is still a good resource. M15

"A History of Dearing, McDuffie Co, GA from 1850 to 1904." A.J. Tayor, Robert Printup Publishing, 1929. This is a 16 page booklet covering the colorful history of little Dearing, GA. Many of the citizens of the area during 1850-1904 are named. The stories contained in the booklet are most likely embellished by the author (it reads like an old fashioned western novel) but it is an interesting glimpse into this little town nevertheless. This book is not indexed. M15

"Sacred to the Memory of... Cemeteries and Burial Sites of Columbia Co, GA." Author: Bill and Jean Blackard. Publisher/Date: Augusta Creative Arts, 2005. This cemetery book is indexed. The only drawback to the book is that the individuals in each cemetery have been put into alphabetical order and you can not tell who is buried next to whom. M15

"The Story of Wrightsboro 1768-1964." Pearl Baker, published by the Wrightsboro Restoration Foundation, unknown date. Pearl Baker was a well-known McDuffie County and Columbia County, GA historian and wrote several books. This book is not indexed but it does contain the names of many of the first settlers of the Wrightsborough Quaker Settlement as well as the history and timeline of the settlement. It is a good book to read in order to have a better understanding of what life was like in this Quaker community instead of just reading a book of facts and figures. M15

Not only are all of the known cemeteries of Lincoln County surveyed, the compilers also researched every person to see if there was an available obituary in any of the local papers and then included an abstract. The book is indexed. The only drawback to the book is that the compilers put the persons in alphabetical order under each cemetery so it is impossible to see who was buried next to whom. M15
