"Love and Chaos." by Ethel (Ness) Krigbaum. Printed by Argus Printers, Stickney, SD 57375. Copyright 1981, Ethel (Ness) Krigbaum, Bethel Island, California 94511. Ethel (Ness) Krigbaum writes the story of her family: her mother, Anna Kennedy Ness, her father, Hans Christian (Harry) Ness, and their thirteen children, born between 1899 and 1923. Anna and Harry raised their children on a farm on the Hanson County line, ten miles north of Fulton, SD. The family history centers around Anna Ness, for she provided the core of love and strength that held the family together through decades of tough times. Krigbaum repeats one mantra throughout her book: "We weren't poor, we just didn't have any money." Krigbaum mentions the names of many neighbors from Hanson County, many mentions of Mitchell, and as far south as Dimock. There are also the married names of all of her siblings. There is no index, but I plan to read it through again and make note of names and pages to accommodate requests. Perhaps I will be able to compile an index (but not today). DP2

Deadwood was a microcosm of the American frontier and the gold rush town. In 71 chapters material is provided on the gold rush, skirmishes with Indians, exploits of road agents and outlaws, and appearances by celebrities such as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, the four Deadwood Dicks "Black Dan", "Madame Mustache", "Buckskin johnny" and "Big Thumb Jake". Arriving from Montana at the start of the gold rush in 1876, Seth Bullock quickly became an integral part of the burgeoning Black Hills community, attempting to create a lasting legacy for himself by working within local and regional politics, through various businesses, and in his many positions at the forefront of Black Hills law enforcement and forest management. 206 pages with black and white photos, notes, bibliography and index.
